Game Cultures - Fresher

Wow, it's been a long time since I've been on here and I have to be honest I kind of missed it. But I'm back now and for a very long time...let me update you...I try to keep this brief.

Since I've been gone, I have passed my 'Game development' BTEC at 'College of Haringey Enfield and North East London' and progressed to 'London South-bank Univerisity' where I am currently studying for degree in 'Game Cultures'. I'm so excited with not just the fact that I made it to uni and passed my maths, which I struggle with but the fact that I have so much great things to look forward to learning about the games industry all around and that if I work hard enough I will get where I want!
So that being said this blog will pretty much turn into my developer diary for uni, it has to be done as part of our modules and I want to do it for me as well as giving you guys a chance to see, comment and criticize my work!

What to expect: well a variety of me showing off work I'm proud of and a lot of me stressing out! Alot of a 'Noob Learning programming', art work, 3D work and sound design and don't forget the odd theory essays and vodcasts.

So now that's out the way next subject is juts a little update on the gaming side..like the actual playing not developing..

I built (I say built but all I managed was to put the CPU in the motherboard and my boyfriend and his brother did the rest..) a shiny beautiful BF3 playing kinda beast PC.. It cost a bit more then expected but it was worth it and I'm happy. I haven't been on my Xbox to much recently although I did play some Gears of war 3 and games like Halo:Reach and AC:Brothehood over the summer. Recently though I have decided to get into PC gaming and I must say I'm thoroughly enjoying it, although I struggle sometimes getting used to KB+Mouse.
Unfortunately I have really had time to play games and get a commentary together for my YouTube channel, yes I have been slacking guys, I'm sorry.

And how can I forget! I finally got a Job at Game, after trying for about 2 years to get hired there I successfully passed my interview and have been hired for Christmas temp, so now I study games, blog games and play games..oh what a life haha.

Any ways here are some pictures to ad some colour to this post and ill be back.. :D

Homefront - Review

Before the game was released I gave you a little overview of what i new and what the game was about, I then pre-ordered the game and having completed  I am now ready to give you guys a full review, so here we go.
Story:
Homefront developed by THQ is a first person action shooter, for those who missed my last post heres the story;
"Its the 2027 after the death of the North Korean leader Kim Jon-il, he son Kim Jon-un takes over power and unites South and North Korea to form the Korean republic, giving them the power to create a stable country both economically and military wise. All ready in conflict with Japan, Korea begin training up using American weapons and modern military training, building both a large and strong military unit via other eastern Asian countries. With all this training and the new experience Korea is then able to invade the USA, with precise military attacks including an EMP strike."

Without giving to much away, the campaign opening scenes begins with speech from the year 2011 of Hillary Clinton explaining how North Korean submarines are found to be guilty of firing a torpedo taking the lives of almost 50 South Koreans. A variety of news report audio is then played  discussing the threat North Korea opposes with there rise in military weapons. The news report flash through the years to the year 2024, showing the invasion of Korean military launching attacks and over throwing America, causing death and destruction.

As the player the game begins with you waking up in an old room, in a house with the suburbs, military Korean soldiers then break in to your room, questing your rebellion against Kim Jon-un before taking you prisoner and placing you on a bus with another prisoner. Once on the bus the game allows to look out the windows showing the player the horror of what is actually going on. The normally friendly peaceful suburban streets are filled with Korean soldiers beating, torturing, shooting and capturing innocent American civilians.
After you seen enough you are then saved by your friend by the name of Connor, where the actually game-play then begins and from then on the game is basically you and too other companions fighting your way the suburbs until you reach California to fight off the Koreans.
Game-Play:
The game-play overall wasn't to bad, although the story itself is extremely short lasting about 5 hours give or take. Despite the disappointing length I enjoyed the storyline and was able to immerse my self deep within it, imagining my self in the situations the game put me in. I honestly felt at times I was both playing and watching a movie, the music felt very similar to Uncharted at times with a more modern action movie twist, in other words dramatic and mellow at the right times and good cut scenes. Although the missions unfortunately aren't much of a challenge and the checkpoints are also pretty close to together making it easier to progress even if you die a few times. I felt I breezed through this game with only a few moments where I felt a little challenged and had put a bit more effort.

The AI, was not done well at all, I found my self getting stuck within doorways, with AI pushing me or trying to walk through me. The AI has been scripted so basically it just does its job at a particular time and will continue to do so until it succeeds, not taking into account the players character and programming the AI in a way to react to players positions or movements.
The were also a few glitches within the campaign, at times I would get stuck trying to climb objects and be forced to restart to checkpoint, which wasn't a big deal, as I mentioned earlier checkpoints are regular. AI spawns were really ridiculously random I would find my self shooting an enemy, and a second or so later  a new enemy would spawn right in front of me in the same spot. What really annoyed me is that the credits glitched and just gave me a black screen with music at the end until I pressed 'A' and returned to menu, not a big deal but I still felt robbed!

The controllers feel quite smooth and easy to get used, although the running at times feels it could be a little bit faster, if I had to compare I would say the weapon use and fluidity feels a bit like Call of Duty, where as the players movement and pace feels alot like Battlefield. Sorry to make the comparison to these top well known FPS's, but as a player of both these popular franchises, I feel the developers; Infinity ward, Treyarch and EA have given gamers alot of new fun experiences, within this genre setting the bar for first person shooters.
Sound/Audio:
The games soundtrack made the game feel like an action movie, great use of music which went well with every scene, reminded me of Uncharted and the feeling it of what's next with the dramatic music, keeping me immersed and  playing to see what's next.
The character voice acting, was a little stiff and felt too scripted, felt very cheesy at times, witty remarks were sometimes repeated and the bad voice acting let it down, taking away from the movie like storyline.
The weapons sounds weren't great either,  alot of the assault rifles sounded the same and some sounded as if they were silenced even though they weren't.
Graphics:
The environment and graphics differ from campaign to multi-player, the campaign gives reminded of  the smooth and sharp colours of CoD , whereas the multi-player reminded more of Battlefield. Great use of colours not to dull, not to extrovert and enough to keep your interest. I played the game on the Xbox 360 and found the graphics to be a to be a pretty good standard, without a HD cable, I am unaware of the games visuals on other platforms.

I rate this game 7/10 - If you enjoy playing on line games this may be a game to pick up to game as the multi-player is pretty fun and the pace is alot like Medal of Honor/Battlefield. I wouldn't recommend buying it just for the campaign, but to wait until it is extremely cheap just to experience it.

(I haven't played enough Multi-player yet to review in depth , and I don't want to give any opinions before giving it more time =)

Girl Gamers

Almost all girl gamers have received some kind of verbal abuse from male gamers, within the online gaming community; "Get back to kitchen", "Are you hot? I bet your fat!", "You shouldn't be playing games", and the well known phrase ..."Make me a sandwich".
Well here's a little something for the male gamers who don't find us equal...=)

Homefront- "The thinking man's BlackOps" ?

Due to be released Friday 18th March within the UK and Wednesday the 15th in the USA, this game hasn't really had in my opinion as much coverage as I thought it would have. I never heard of it until a friend mentioned in last week. After doing my research I have began to get genuinely excited for this game, and will be purchasing it on the day of release.
Its 2027,  after the death of the Korean leader Kim Jon-il. His son, Kim Jon-un unites North Korea with South Korea forming one country, giving them the power to create a stable country economically and military wise. Already in conflict with Japan, Korea begin training up using American weapons and modern military training, building up a large military system via other eastern Asian countries. With all the training, and new experience the Koreans are able to invade the USA, with carefully planned military strikes, including an EMP strike.

Set within a suburban / rural environment you are fighting the Koreans trying to liberate your country, dealing with warfare on your door step! Hence the name 'Homefront'
The on-line game-play from what I have seen looks pretty action packed and intense, with a small variety of different vehicles available to the player; Helicopters, Jeeps and tanks, aswell as the basic FPS set of weapons, this game gives you want you pretty much want from a shooter. One unique multi-player feature is the 'Battle points' system the developers have included (kind of like kill streaks) allowing players to earn points in match and spend them in that match on a helpful pieces of equipment; Battle drones, rocket launchers ect, these can be used to mark and target enemy players helping both you and your team mates.
From what I have seen the game looks like a brilliant version of Battlefield and Call of Duty merged into one, with an enticing  story line and good game-play mechanics. A great new game to spend hours playing to replace Black-Ops whilst anticipating Battlefield 3!

I can't really give a full review or opinion until I play the game for my self all I can tell you for now is I am excited to put CoD down for a bit and immerse my self within this multi-player!

Unreal Engine 3

Unreal Game Engine developed in 1991 (the year I was born =D) by Epic Games famous for its development of games such as Unreal Tournament 3 and the Gears of war franchise. Unreal Engine was also used to develop Bioshock and Borderlands <one of my top favourite games!

Latest news revealed by Epic games talks about there next game engine's, development, the  improvement of the graphics and the incredible capabilities. New features include its support of DirectX 11 (An API  used on Microsoft Platforms)

Epic Games have revealed screen shots and video footage from a Tech demo by the name 'Samaritan', which present the improvements they have made with deferred rendering, anti aliasing, subsurface scattering and  image-based reflections. What does all this fancy game engine talk mean? A vast improvement graphics wise, all this allows for more realistic cut-scenes and hopefully in game graphics. Better shadow representation, realistic lighting directions and scattering.
~Here is a couple of screen shots a video demonstrating its beauty~

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

Is that Jason Stathom? ..YUM =) I'll be honest with you, I have never really given Uncharted much praise, I mean don't get me wrong it is a fantastic game, I just didn't own a PS3 when the first one was released so I never took much notice. So when I finally got my hands on a PS3, I purchased Uncharted 2 due to all the hype I had heard about it. Maybe it was because I was lazy or didn't enjoy the game mechanics but I just didn't seem to get into it. I am a little bit more intrigued by Drake's deception though as we have some new locations including London! Yay, and the fact that what appears to be Jason Stathom, modeled and voice acting? That's not the only reason though...I swear.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I can't freakin' wait for this game, this is probably one of my most anticipated games in a very long time. I remember playing Deus Ex: Invisible War on my brothers Xbox when I was about twelve, I could not put it down and played through it 2 times.
Here's a video of the game-play, if you have never played this game before. (Remembering the graphics are 2003), the game has Mass effect feel to it , with a non-linear story line. You assume the role of a trainee for a story bound 'Taurus Academy' by the name of Alex D. Set in Chicago the player advances through the game learning of different factions, who's intentions are too radically change the world. The game gives the player freedom with its branching storyline.
DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION
Set 25 years after 'Invisible War' in the year 2027 you now assume the role of Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT specialist, who has been specially selected to over look the defence of the USA's most risky biotechnology firm. After a break in at the firm, the scientist's who's secrets you were there to protect are killed. After being badly injured during the attack you have no choice but to become mechanically augmented, you are soon chasing down leads all over the world, unable to know who you can and cannot trust.
Here's a video of some game play =) #Nerdgasm

Dead Island

Taking place on a fictional island founded by Australian settlers in 1895, by the name of 'Banoi' just off the coast of Papua new Guinea. Un-expectantly an epidemic breaks out at a luxurious beach resort, and the tourists are faced with a zombie apocalypse! (Sounds relaxing!)
The game meshes together fast pace first person action, with a large amount of attention on the melee combat. Basically your in an Open world tropical island, fighting hordes of zombies. If the zombies alone haven't yet persuaded you to check out this game then the weapon customisation and character development might tickle your fancy? The character development gives the game a little RPG elements to it, which is great for gamers who enjoy nurturing their character. Oh and don't forget the Co-Op mode with up to 4 players!
After seeing this trailer, I must say wow, the graphics are exceptional and the game looks intense from the small snippet shown to us.

Heres a Few screen shots...

Games --> Movies?

Its seems these days more games are being adapted into movies, Prince of Persia and Mortal Kombat for example. After the great success of Modern Warfare 2 from the Call of Duty franchise, came an acted adaptation of the mission 'Find Makarov' . Could this be the future? There has already been rumours about Uncharted becoming a movie, but this has yet be confirmed, and with games such as Heavy Rain for PS3, giving the player a movie like experience, it has become more important for games to have a brilliant interesting storyline. Killzone was also adapted into a short film (Killzone Extraction) with brilliant pyrotechnics and acting. Hopefully in the future more games will be remade into movies...3D movies possibly.

What Games would you like to see make it to the big screen?

Top 5 Youtube Subscriptions

I'll try keep this short and sweet, a few reason why these are my top 5 favourite YouTubers...
1. SeaNanners
Known for his gaming skills, brilliant catch phrases and commentary , particularly 'Call of Duty' and 'Minecraft',although not just these. Very entertaining to watch, Has such a calming voice you can't help but listen to his jokes and what he has to say. One of the main subs I look forward to watching, if I'm having a bad day his commentary and game-play cheer me up, if I'm stressed it calms me down. His gaming skills are pretty epic as well I must say, but he's not all about showing off the highest possible score or some crazy tricks and isn't afraid to upload average game-play and talk to as well as connect with his audience.

2.NooBTooB
Reviewers Tobin and Yuzo. Bloody hilarious. They review games openly and honestly if they think something is a load of bullsh**t they will tell you. Not afraid to disagree with each other. They don't just give you a quick over view either, they tell you about almost every aspect they experienced through their gaming, making you feel like you played the game already. Always cracking jokes making their up to 1 and a half hour shows easy and enjoyable to watch!

Oh and they love their wine!

3.Tejbz
From Sweden he is full of energy and you can tell he loves what he does. Loves Video games and girls, his videos display brilliant gaming skill, done with such ease and great catch phrases. Generally known by the same internet community who are also aware of SeaNanners. Fun to watch, makes me feel a little bit more skilled after watching, no lie.

4.Swoozie
Vlogger/ Reviewer, this guys is great at keeping you enticed as he tells you great stories from his normal life. Has a passion for gaming as he vlogs about his attendance to different game conventions, give his views and opinions on what new games he's been playing.
I also enjoy his great video editing skills and sketches he uses to tell some of his stories gives me a great lol. Basically a cool nerd.

5.TobyGames
Off the wall and wacky, not to everyones taste, but quite entertaining. he doesn't boast to be the best gamer and just has fun playing a wide variety of different games as the audience listen to his random chatter and reactions throughout. Although this gaming channel is not his main channel  it adds to the other great channel he has;
Tobuscus; His main channel where he shows 3 clips each episode asks his audience to vote of which clip was  'Cute' 'Win' or 'Fail'.
TobyTurner; This is his vlogging channel.

This list is just my opinion, check 'em out and subscribe!

SeaBanana!

Here's a video/Commentary I thought I would share with you. Why?
Because I am big fan of this guy and this video makes me happy, but I'm not just here to please myself am I?

Known as SeaNanners within the YouTube & Machinima Community he is a great guy to listen too and watch; Skilled, funny and easy going. This video imparticular is good game-play but that's not what got me, what he talked about was the best, I have watched this a couple times and it makes me content every time. He discusses life and how sometimes you need to stop over-processing your thoughts and life, go blank and just feel great about nothing imparticular.
 Hope you Enjoy!
